Youth trends study

Read the following short article:
High School and Youth Trends (NIDA)

Respond to one of the positive findings and one of the areas of concern. Consider social implications, availability, costs, etc. in your responses. This should not be "I think it's good kids aren't smoking as much"...

  1. I think the number of kids smoking is at its lowest point in history because kids are finding new drugs that are easier to get and are, in a way, a better high, such as marijuana. As addiction to drugs like these develop, kids aren't trying cigarettes anymore, skipping straight to drugs that make them high. An area of concern that goes along with this is the increased use of smokeless tobacco. I believe that kids think that the only problem with cigarettes is the smoke, so they settle on chewing smokeless tobacco, thinking it solves the problem. It also may be easier to hide in public if you are underage to be chewing rather than smoking, causing this crossover.

  2. while most people checked out that actual section i checked the chart and found inhalant use is going down. since that is what i am working on I find it great that inhalant use is going down. i have no clue why its going down besides awareness lectures or common sense.

  3. i think it is good that the use of cigrettes is going down because tobacco is one of the leading killers of people.but marijuana is going up. i thinks it is going up because it is become more acsesible and it is even becoming legal. i also think the smokeless cigeratte use is going up because people do not think it is as bad as a regular cigarette because they do not know the harm it can do to your body

  4. A positive finding is that the use of cigarettes has gone down. Unfortunately, this is most likely becuase the former users are now using more harmful drugs that get them high. An area of concern is that the use of vicodin and oxycotton has gone up. This is probably because it is sometimes found in homes and is more accessable than other drugs.

  5. i think it is very positive that the use of "hardcore" drugs such as meth have been dropping consistantly over the year, and continue to drop. However, the use of more commercial drugs such as marijuana are beginning to become more prevalent among teens. while marijuana use has been dropping consistantly, that trend has recently come to a pause becuase of the popularity of the drug.

  6. Its good that some drug use is at an all time low. Teens can be easily influenced by these sorts of things and seeing as enough people are taking notice and putting a stop to it is great. Some kids think smoking cant hurt them though. They dont realize that its not a natural substance they are putting into their body, so they pay no mind to it.

  7. The decrease in the users of users of Meth, cigarettes, and other very deadly drugs is definitely a good thing. However, the increase in drugs such as Marijuana and Vicodin are on the prowl in th life of teenagers. Most teens do these things because of peer pressure, and seeing and hearing about other teens using the drug. The saddest part of all of this, is that most teena don't actually know what it is doing to their bodies.

  8. The decrease in the use of Meth is definitely a positive finding in this survey. Methamphedimenes are very scary and horribly addictive and bad for your body. It is most definitely a good thing that the percentages of use of this drug has decresed. While this drug has not been used as frequently, marijuana has increased its popularity among teenagers. This is possibly because people think it is not bad for them and is not illegal. Peer pressure also takes a toll on this. Most teens just say yes to impress their friends, without the knowledge of what it does to them. It does not help that marijuana is known as a gateway drug meaning it leads people into usage of heavier drugs.

  9. The decrease in the use of methanphetamine is a very positive result, with the rate almost being cut in half of the total amount of eighth graders using it. Users in the past year has only been one percent and users in the past month, point five percent.
The increase of Marijuana is startling, partially because the lifetime use has gone up by ten percent but also that daily use has increased by three percent. the increase might be because of the decrease of other drugs, with them becoming k own as more dangerous, they have changed or decided that marijuana is a better choice.

  10. A positive finding is that cigarette use has gone down. Since cigarettes are addictive, many people buy a lot of packs. But since the economy has gone down and people are losing their jobs, affording cigarettes is a lot of money. A negative finding is that the use of Marijuana has gone up. Maybe people think that Marijuana is not as harmful as other drugs are. But the truth of the matter is that Marijuana is a harmful drug just like the others. It has the same effects, if not more, than other drugs.

  11. I think it is positive that Cigarette smoking is at its lowest point in the history because it can cause you to get cancer. Many people are addictted to tobacco so this is a positive thing for the nations populatoin. One area of concern is that daily use of smokeless tobacco increased significantly among 10th-graders. Also that the use of Marijuana has increased over the years.

  12. A positive finding is that cigarette smoking is at its lowest point in history. This is probably because people have either found the negative effects too harmful, or have found other drugs to use. Cigarettes are very addictive and kids may be turning to other drugs like Marijuana because doctors use it for medical reasons.

  13. Cigarette smoking is at it lowest point probably because our scocity is becoming more aware of the issues and implacations of cigarette smoke, but not as much in other drugs. Hallucinogens and LSD most likey have fallen in use just because it is falling 'out of style'. Meth has also decreased due to the growing awareness of the drug. Students and teens will know what to look for and avoide.
In areas of concern, smokeless tabacco has risen in use most likely due to the easiness for young students to hide it. While chewing, if the other person does not smell the breath, the student chewing the tabacco can pretend it is gum. Also, most teens are told that tabacco is less harmful then most other drugs.

  14. I think there has been a drop of smokers in the past years because there are different drugs they can get a hand on now. THey night consider the new ones better and they might taste better to them.
I think that there has been a increase of teens using smokeless tobacco because it might cost cheaper and easier to get a hand on. It is probably easier to hide to cause there wont be any smoke or you wont smell like you have been smoking.

  15. I think that more people have stopped smoking over the years because they have other choices of things to take that might taste or feel better to them and that also are cheaper and easier to get.
More teens nowadays are doing smokeless tobacco probably because they don't think it harms them and also it might be easier and cheaper to get. Also more teens might take it because it is easier to hide the smell.

  16. I think it is awesome that now the binge use of alchohol has decreased. It really shows that the kids are being educated about the dangers of alchohol. With the area of Marijuana I think that since the use had gone down then people thought that they could stop worrying about it and it would just go away in time. They were wrong. Since the use hasn't improved it shows that there is still much to be done about Marijuana.

  17. Its good that less teens are smoking, but its not good that the amount of teens using smokeless tabacco has gone up. i think that the numbers have risen because they dont think its as bad for them. also it seems like they can get away with it more easly because they dont leave cigarettes behinde

  18. Even though the use of Meth, cigarettes, and other very deadly drugs had gone down the increase in other drugs like Marijuana or Vidcodin. Most teenagers don't realize how harmful what they are doing really is. Most teens are probably really uneducated and don't see the harm in doing smokeless tobacco, especially since their friends do it too.

  19. A good point is the use of cigarretes is down. They are very addictingi and can cause cancer. Although a bad thing is the increased use of smokeless tobacco. This is terrible for your mouth and teeth.
