Is photoshop usage in advertising "fair"? How does it make you feel knowing that advertisers aren't using 'real' people?

Find a photoshopped advertisement on the internet and post the picture. Respond to eachother's photos.

  2. I don't think that the usage of photoshop in advertisements in considered "unfair", but i do think it is having a negative effect on society.
I think a lot of people's self esteem is very low today because of the editing done on pictures in the media. A girl might flip through a magazine and see someone who everyone seems to call "perfect", when in reality the girl doesnt look like that at all. I think these companies have a right to use photoshop and other programs to edit photos so it is fair, but at the same time is is causing major issues. It might even be part of the reason disorders similiar to anorexia are being downplayed. Being too thin is considered fashionable, which i think is sick.
Knowing that these people, in reality, don't actually look like that actuaslly makes me feel better personally. I think this is because it helps knowing that in reality no one looks like the people in the media.
This is another really good example of edit.

  3. Photoshoping advertisements is "unfair" because of the unlimited things that can be done with it. The effects of retooling for "limitless" beauty sets the bar at a ridiculously high level that no one has achieved without retouching. But at the same time the job of advertisers is to make you buy the product in question. that's the problem people think that this is an actual result when it faked. Advertising should be backing up your claims, if you make fake claims then it's the same as lying.

  5. http://ll-media.tmz.com/2008/08/06/0806_beyonce_flip.jpg is my example. in my opinion photoshopped ads are not fair because they distort what true beauty is. in my opinion you just have to believe that you are beautiful to be beautiful. i mean look at me i look at ads for all of the guy stuff and i don't pay attention to the looks of the models. i just think or know i look good and in turn that attitude makes me seem better looking. some people in our grade are beautiful and probably don't know it. these ads are just a disaster. i mean if i got in an ad i would check to see how much photoshop they did or tell them not to photoshop at all to show that we are good looking just by being us.

  6. I believe that limiting the use of photo editing would be the right choice but banning it all together would not work to well. I think if they were to limit the use of editing software then people would be less influenced by their ads.

  9. I think that using photoshopped images to advertise a product is very unfair. It makes the product seem much better than it is. Here's a couple of examples:

  10. I think that using photoshopped images as advertisements is unfair to put many. Everybody, but mostly women and girls, will look at magazines, and at the 'perfection' of the models, and feel poorly of themselves. I think that this is a major cause of poor self-esteem, and of things like eating disorders.

I think Hannah's pictures were a very good example of reality v. 'perfection'

  11. I think editing photos is very unfair. Editors alter, change, and enhance features on people for their advertisments or photos. This is very wrong because it effects one's self esteem greatly. It lowers their self esteem because suddenly one sees a beautiful model with a slim waist and long legs or a flawless skin, but this is all altered by a computer using photoshop. It makes me feel horrible that photos and advertisments can make people feel bad about their looks or features. Natural beauty is the best kind of pretty there is and magazine editors need to learn that.

  12. No because it will make people think that they should look like that even though that what they perseve isn't real and throws the real perception of body image off and make people have a lower self asteam. It can also turn people into fake people who only try to look like those fake pictures

  13. Photoshopping pictures is very unfair. It lowers self-esteem a ton! Even if we know the pictures are edited we still want to look like the model. I don't think they should edit celebrities at all because most of them are gorgeous just the way they are. I'm sure it also hurts the celebrities a bit also by knowing that the photographers and ad people don't think they look good enough. It is an unfair thing to do that is bad for self esteem!

  14. No it is not fair because the image that they show to the public is a fake person, so the image that people think of beauty is also a fake one. the reason i believe the media does this is to compete with other companies, for instance if one magazine seems to be doing well and other companies notice that they have seemingly perfect people on the covers, than their initial thought would be to have prettier people than the other company, and that cycle repeats its self.

  15. There is no way any of this is fair. People audition for modeling and they are turned back because people say they are not pretty enough or they are to fat. It makes me feel bad for everybody that is made fun of for their looks, when some models aren't even completley real people.

  16. I think Photoshop usage is unfair because it changes what real beauty is in reality. Having a person edited on Photoshop makes us feel that we should be that type of beauty. In reality, though, that person was edited to be that certain beauty. Just knowing that advertisers aren’t using real people doesn’t make me mad; it just makes me a bit disappointed. You see, if a girl is flipping through a magazine and she sees this woman who is really pretty, then the girl would want to look like her. But just imagine finding out that the person was edited to be that way. http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/blonde/blonde1.html

  17. i think that changing the models features and the way the look is not fair to us and even them. If i was changed into something i am not it would make me feel bad about the real way i look!
In some ways knowing that they do not use real people makes me feel good because it means they really arent that pretty in real life. It makes you feel better that people are not that beautiful.

  18. Its unfair because it makes models seem perfect when they really aren't. This makes people feel bad about themselves because they dont see themselves as perfect.

  20. To think that people in ads are not real people is very weird and unfair. It makes people feel that you can't look like a model without being photoshoped or airbrushed. http://psychcentral.com/blog/images/Image7.jpg

  21. I think that it is unfair for magazines to photoshop their pictures because girls, and boys, will make these people their idols and will try to base what they look like off of the pictures... trying to look like something that isnt real is kinda hard

  22. It is not fair at all for advertisements to be photoshoped becasue then they are showing that even the biggest celebrities aren't perfect when they are trying to show their, "perfect bodies." Whats also ironic is now celebrities are going to try even harder to become a picture of them that is not even real.

  23. This is all just a hoax to make people feel poor about themselves. It is a horrible marketing tecnique and, although quite effective, have a bad outcome on people. They make people think that their product will make up for the imperfections they have only noticed because of that company in the first place.

  24. Its absolutely not fair to any person that looks at the advertisement. Using programs like photoshop and other programs that change someone's true appearance are completely demoralizing to the viewers. these advertisements send the wrong message and the fact that a company can benefit from an add with false imagery is horrible. False imagery is disrespecting a model that is already skinny and the viewers.

  25. Photoshopping is not fair at all. I can understand photoshopping when they want to boost the color of a picture but not to distort the figure of the person. Distorting the figure makes people think that thats what people should look like and thats what themselves should look like. But what they don't know is that the person is not real. It is not a picture of a real body. And that is what is not fair. Kids and teenagers are growing up seeing these non real bodies of models and thinking that it is what humans are supposed to look like.

Here is my picture, It is not too drastic but you can tell that it was photoshopped :

this is a really good website to show how photoshopping is totally fake! I don't think it is fair that people have to look at magazines and ads for companies when their models technically aren't even "real" people. The way people look in these pictures make us feel like we have to look like them, because they are what is considered pretty. I definately don't think it is fair, and i think that the media should stop doing this because they are making things unfair for the "normal" people in the country.

this is an example of how BP photoshopped some of the pictures of the oil spill. it happens a lot in the magazine ads with models and it is not right to do that - especially with young people feeling pressured about how they look. it is really showing that the ads are not truthful. my web site shows that it also happens in the business and corporate world. it is all about the image.

I think photoshopping isn't fair, because it is exploiting unrealistic beauty. In this photograph, the magazine took an already gorgeous girl and pushed her prettiness over the top, getting rid of things such as the bags you get under your eyes when you smile. Now when young girls think, I want to be as pretty as that model, they'll be chasing after an impossibility.

  29. It’s not right that editors are airbrushing the models. It provides a way for the customers to always have to buy their item, and even then they will never look as good as the models. Seeing those pictures everyday lead girls to negatively view themselves, and in some ways, lead to depression, and even anorexia.
It would be really nice it the media no longer did retouching as Jezebel editor-in-chief Anna Holmes said. But the media just says that to calm society down. They really aren’t going to stop retouching; they are just going to be more careful in doing so.
    Here’s my link:
    http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/52-worst-photoshop-mistakes-in-magazines/
I know this isn’t directly relating to’ body image’ but it shows some pretty awful mistakes that the editors have made. It also shows just how often we see photo-shopped images and that we usually don’t see the small mistakes or that there aren’t any. But that still doesn’t mean we aren’t looking at one.

  30. I think that photoshopping is completely unfair... its showing off fake beauty in order to simply advertise.... In a majority of the pictures the women are extremely underweight, which in the end is just advertising anorexia and other terrible sicknesses. By posting these pictures young kids look up to these "models" and want to look just like them, which would be completely unhealthy...
